Verdict
Base44 suits non-developers and small teams who want a hosted app with a database, sign-in, payments and a built-in security scan from a $20 plan 1,16. The catch is credits and billing: Trustpilot reviewers rate it 2.8 out of 5 from 906 reviews, citing credits used up during AI debugging and trouble with refunds 29.
Good fit if you are
- Non-developers building internal tools, customer portals and small business apps
- Teams that want hosting, database, sign-in and payments in one place
- Builders who want a security scan and browser tests before they publish
Look elsewhere if you are
- Teams that need truly native iOS and Android apps
- Buyers who need a predictable monthly bill
- Developers who want to run the full app outside Base44
Pros and cons

What Base44 is
Base44 is an AI app builder. You describe an app in plain language, and it builds the pages, database, sign-in and backend functions, then hosts the result 1,2. Paid plans connect your own domain, and Builder and up add GitHub sync, Stripe and connectors to services such as Gmail, Slack and Snowflake 1,6,7,15. Base44 also sells Superagents, AI assistants that work over WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack and other channels 23.
Israeli programmer Maor Shlomo founded and bootstrapped Base44 26. Wix agreed to buy it in June 2025 for $80 million upfront plus milestone payments in 2029, and runs it as an independent product and business 25,26. Base44 now offers payments and domains through Wix 23.
What it can do
The AI chat has three modes: Build acts on prompts at once, Discuss plans changes without touching code, and Edit changes elements you click in the preview 2. Auto picks a model for each request, or you choose one, such as Base44's own Base 1, Opus 5.5 or a GPT model; a manual choice can cost more credits 2. Branches give each line of work its own chat, preview and version history, and you can revert to any saved version 12. Branches share live data, but Builder and up can switch the preview to a separate test database 12,13.
Before launch, a testing agent runs browser tests of key flows and lists what failed; one click sends a fix prompt to the AI, at about 1 to 4 credits a test run 3. A security scan checks permissions, secrets and backend functions and applies recommended fixes in one click 16,23. On phones, apps run in the browser or from the home screen 5. Builder and up can download iOS and Android store files that run the published app inside a web view, and you submit them through your own developer accounts 4.
- Actions. From a prompt, Base44 builds a web app with pages, a database, sign-in and backend functions, and a testing agent runs browser tests of key flows and sends failures to the AI to fix 1,3. It adds Stripe or Wix payments and connectors such as Gmail, Slack and Snowflake, and apps can call your own APIs imported from an OpenAPI spec 6,7,8,23.
- Setup. Describe the app in the AI chat: Build mode acts at once, Discuss mode plans changes first at 0.3 credits a message, and Edit mode changes elements you click in the preview 2. Publishing gives a hosted app, and Starter and up connect your own domain 1,15.
- Owning the code. Starter and up edit code in the Code tab 1,9, Builder and up sync two ways with GitHub 10, and an Apps API endpoint downloads the source as a zip 11; the docs do not describe running the app outside Base44 10.
- Analytics. Every plan includes app analytics 1; Enterprise adds audit logs, monitoring APIs and per-member credit limits 21.
Pricing
The Free plan gives 25 message credits and 100 integration credits a month for up to 5 apps 1. Paid plans run from Starter at $20 a month billed monthly ($16 billed yearly) to Elite at $160 a month billed yearly, with 100 to 1,200 message credits and 2,000 to 50,000 integration credits a month 1. Base44 says yearly billing saves 20% 1. Message credits pay for building with the AI, and the app's backend operations use integration credits 1,24. Private apps and custom domains need Starter, and GitHub sync, Stripe, connectors and test data need Builder at $40 a month billed yearly 1,6,7,10,13,14. The real cost depends on how many credits the AI uses: Discuss mode costs 0.3 credits a message, other modes vary by model and task, and reviewers report credits running out during debugging 2,29. Enterprise is priced by quote 1.

Security and data
Base44 holds SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001, offers a GDPR data processing agreement on request, and encrypts data with TLS 1.2+ in transit and AES-256 at rest 19,21. App data is stored in the US by default, and Elite and Enterprise workspaces can choose EU, UK or US storage 18,19. Its trust center lists Anthropic, OpenAI, Google Gemini, xAI and Z.ai among its LLM subprocessors, with apps served through AWS, Cloudflare and MongoDB 20. Enterprise workspaces can opt out of AI model training, but the privacy policy does not say how other plans' data is used for training 21,22. Every app gets a security scan, and Builder and up add code vulnerability checks and an optional Wiz scan 16,17. Enterprise adds organizational SSO, SCIM, IP allowlisting and audit logs 21.
- Security checks on your app. Built-in security scan on every plan checks data permissions, exposed secrets, unauthenticated backend functions, exposed credit-using features, dependencies and security headers; code vulnerability scanning and an optional Wiz scan need Builder or higher 16,17
- Data residency. App data is stored in the US by default; Elite and Enterprise workspaces can choose EU, UK or US storage 18,19
- Training on your data. Enterprise workspaces can opt out of AI model training 19,21; the privacy policy does not say whether other plans' data trains models 22
- AI models. Anthropic, OpenAI, Google Gemini, xAI, Z.ai and other LLM hosts are listed as subprocessors 20
What customers say
Base44 has little independent review data. Trustpilot shows 2.8 out of 5 from 906 reviews: 53% give one star, citing charges after cancellation, refused refunds and credits used up during debugging, while five-star reviews praise how fast non-developers can build 29. G2 lists 3.8 from only 4 reviews 30. Base44 names BenQ Latin America, which it says shipped 9 apps in 2 months 21. The main independent coverage is the Wix deal and Wiz's 2025 finding that outsiders could register for private apps, which Wix fixed within a day 25,27,28.
| Platform | Rating | Reviews | Seen |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trustpilot (Base44)29 | 2.8 / 5 | 906 | 8 October 2026 |
| G2 (Base44)30 | 3.8 / 5 | 4 | 8 October 2026 |
What Wix claims (not independently verified):
- BenQ Latin America: a report that took 10 days now takes 20 minutes, $50,000 to $100,000 saved, and 9 apps shipped in 2 months 21
- 250,000 users in its first six months, per its founder at the time of the 2025 sale 26
Concerns raised by others:
- In July 2025 the security firm Wiz found that anyone with an app's public ID could register for a private Base44 app and get past its sign-in, including SSO; Wix fixed it in under 24 hours and found no sign of abuse 27,28.
- On Trustpilot, 53% of 906 reviews give one star, citing charges after cancellation, refused refunds and credits used up while the AI debugs its own errors 29.
