NiCE Cognigy review

An enterprise platform for AI voice and chat agents that plugs into existing contact center telephony.

NiCE completed its $955 million acquisition of Cognigy on September 8, 2025; the product is now sold as NiCE Cognigy, both standalone and inside NiCE's CXone Mpower platform 3,4.

Verdict

NiCE Cognigy suits large contact centers that want voice and chat agents with strict testing, versioning and audit controls, connected to NiCE CXone, Genesys or their own SIP carriers 1,13,15,20. The catch is cost and effort: the entry voice contract on AWS Marketplace costs $53,916 a year, and you bring your own speech, LLM and carrier accounts 5,25,28.

Good fit if you are

  • Enterprise contact centers already on NiCE CXone, Genesys, Avaya or Amazon Connect
  • Teams that need EU, UK, US or Australian hosting and strict release controls
  • Multilingual service across phone, web chat, SMS and WhatsApp

Look elsewhere if you are

  • Small teams that want a self-serve monthly plan
  • Buyers who want one bill that covers voice, model and phone line
  • Teams that need a built-in batch outbound call campaign tool

Pros and cons

What we like

  • AI agents call your APIs through tool actions and can load tools from remote MCP servers during a conversation 5,6.
  • Snapshots freeze an immutable version of a project for production while developers keep working 15.
  • A conversation Simulator, browser test calls and Playbooks check agents before launch 13,14.
  • Certified to ISO 27001, ISO 27701, ISO 42001, SOC 2 Type II, TISAX and BSI C5, with PCI DSS v4.0.1 on CXone deployments 21,22.
  • Shared SaaS runs in Europe, the US, the UK and Australia 7,23.

What to watch

  • No public price list outside AWS Marketplace, where the entry contract with voice costs $53,916 for 12 months 28.
  • Speech and LLM providers run on your own accounts and API keys, so they bill you separately 5,25.
  • Outbound calls start one at a time from a flow or the API; no batch campaign tool is documented 7,32.
  • The Simulator tests text conversations only, and browser test calls on SaaS must be switched on by support 13,14.
  • On-premises installation is no longer offered to new customers 24.

What NiCE Cognigy is

NiCE Cognigy is an enterprise platform for AI agents on phone and digital channels. Its Voice Gateway connects agents to phone lines through SIP carriers and to contact center platforms such as NiCE CXone, Genesys, Avaya and Amazon Connect 1,12. Named users include Toyota, Lufthansa and DHL 1,2.

NiCE closed its $955 million purchase of Cognigy, which is headquartered in Düsseldorf, on September 8, 2025 4,21. Cognigy is sold both inside NiCE's CXone Mpower platform and as a standalone product, and its co-founder Philipp Heltewig now runs NiCE Cognigy as general manager and serves as NiCE's chief AI officer 3,4.

What it can do

You build an agent in a flow with an AI Agent node that holds its persona, job instructions, knowledge and tools 5,6. Tool actions run when the model decides to use them and can call any API, and an MCP Tool node loads tools from a remote MCP server 6. The primary model comes from your own OpenAI, Azure OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Amazon Bedrock or Mistral account 5.

For phone calls, the Voice Gateway handles speech-to-text and text-to-speech through vendors you connect with your own keys, such as Deepgram, ElevenLabs, Microsoft or Speechmatics 25. Outbound calls start from a flow or through the Voice Gateway API 7. The Transfer node hands calls to people by SIP REFER or a new dialed leg 8. Before launch, the Simulator runs generated text conversations against personas, missions and success criteria, and Voice Call mode places test calls from the browser 13,14. Snapshots then lock a version for production 15.

  • Actions. AI agents run tool actions that call external APIs or rules-based logic, and can load tools from a remote MCP server 5,6. Flows can also send HTTP requests and start outbound calls through the Voice Gateway API or a Transfer node 7.
  • Setup. Build the agent in a flow with an AI Agent node, connect a speech service and a SIP carrier in the Voice Gateway portal, and publish through an Endpoint 5,25,11.
  • Transfer to people. The Transfer node forwards calls by SIP REFER or dials a new leg with caller ID, timeout and duration limits, and can pass the transcript to the contact center in SIP headers for Agent Copilot 8.
  • Analytics. Insights shows searchable conversation transcripts, and the beta Conversation Analyzer scores conversations against predefined and custom criteria 17,18.

Pricing

Cognigy publishes prices only through its AWS Marketplace listing, where every option is a 12-month contract 28. The Basic tier costs $43,080 a year for the platform, setup, 60,000 conversations and standard support; adding five voice gateways raises it to $53,916 28. An enterprise licence for up to 10 million conversations a year is listed at $1,000,000, with a separate $200,000 ramp-up option 28. Speech and LLM usage run on accounts you connect with your own keys, so those providers bill you directly, and phone numbers come from your SIP carrier 5,25. For 1,000 minutes a month, the Basic tier with voice works out to about $4,493 a month before those charges.

Security and data

Cognigy's trust center lists ISO 27001, ISO 27701, ISO 42001, SOC 2 Type II, TISAX and BSI C5 21. In July 2026 it added an independently assessed PCI DSS v4.0.1 attestation for supported deployments on CXone instances, which excludes Live Agent 22. Shared SaaS runs in Europe, the US, the UK and Australia 7,23, and some speech vendors offer EU-hosted endpoints 25. Data Redaction removes PII such as card numbers and email addresses from logs and analytics, and you can add your own patterns 16. Cognigy does not publish a policy on training with customer data, and its healthcare page shows a HIPAA badge without BAA terms 27. On-premises installs are closed to new customers 24.

  • HIPAA. A HIPAA badge appears on the healthcare page; no BAA terms are published 27
  • Data residency. Shared SaaS in the EU, US, UK and Australia 7,23; EU-hosted endpoints for some speech vendors 25
  • Training on your data. Not published
  • AI models. Your own OpenAI, Azure OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, Amazon Bedrock or Mistral account 5; a platform-provided Azure OpenAI GPT-4o model for design-time features 26
