Zendesk AI agents review

Zendesk's built-in AI agents that resolve messaging, email and voice requests and bill per verified resolution.

Zendesk stopped developing AI agents – Essential and legacy bot features on August 31, 2026, and starts forced migration to the new AI agent experience in January 2027 5.

Verdict

Zendesk AI agents suit teams already on Zendesk that want automation inside their helpdesk, with a resolution allowance in every plan 2. The catch is cost and churn: extra resolutions run $1.50 to $2.00 on top of seats, and the product and billing model were reworked during 2026 2,3,4.

Good fit if you are

  • Teams already running Zendesk that want AI in the same agent workspace
  • Multichannel support desks that need voice and email automation as well as chat
  • Regulated or public-sector teams that need ISO 42001, HIPAA or FedRAMP coverage

Look elsewhere if you are

  • Teams on another helpdesk that want a drop-in agent without changing tools
  • Small teams chasing the lowest price per resolution
  • Buyers who want stable packaging after the 2026 product and billing changes

Pros and cons

What we like

  • AI agents are included in every Support and Suite plan, with 5 to 15 resolutions per agent each month 2.
  • Only verified resolutions count against the allowance; assisted escalations and contained conversations are free 3.
  • Messaging, email and voice AI agents are all generally available, with voice in 53 languages 6,13.
  • Procedures act in other systems, and commerce agents connect to Shopify, Narvar, Stripe and Riskified for returns and refunds 8,12.
  • Deep compliance stack, including ISO 42001, FedRAMP LI-SaaS authorization and a HIPAA BAA 14.

What to watch

  • Extra resolutions cost $1.50 on a committed volume or $2.00 pay-as-you-go, on top of per-agent seats 2.
  • Core AI agents need a Zendesk plan; other helpdesks need the separate Forethought or Specialized Agents offerings 2,12.
  • AI agents – Essential and legacy bots are being retired, and resolution counts may change after migration 5.
  • Procedure testing is documented for messaging; email and voice agents follow separate testing processes 9.
  • Data residency requires the paid Data Center Location add-on 14.

What Zendesk AI agents is

Zendesk AI agents are the autonomous agents built into Zendesk's Resolution Platform. They work across messaging, email and voice, answer from your knowledge, and run procedures that act in other systems 6,7. Since May 2026, capabilities that used to need the AI agents – Advanced add-on, such as agentic reasoning, multi-step procedures and API integrations, come with every Suite and Support plan 4.

Zendesk has been private since a $10.2 billion buyout led by Hellman & Friedman and Permira in 2022 18. In March 2026 it bought Forethought to speed up self-improving agents and voice automation 18. In September it launched Specialized Agents for commerce and a no-code Agent Builder for custom agents 12. Older AI agents – Essential and the legacy bot builder are being retired 5.

What it can do

You start from existing help content and policies, then add generative procedures that guide the agent toward a goal while staying inside business rules 1,8. Procedures call API integrations to look up an order, check shipping or update an address 8; commerce Industry Agents connect to Shopify, Narvar, Stripe and Riskified for returns and refunds 12. Knowledge connectors pull in Notion, SharePoint and Google Drive 13. Voice AI agents are generally available in 53 languages, with handoff, transcripts and summaries 6.

Procedures can be tested before publishing, and every change is saved in a version history you can restore 9. Escalation flows decide when to forward to a human, gather details first, and switch to email outside working hours 10. A reporting dashboard, refreshed hourly, tracks automated resolutions, escalations and CSAT by use case 11.

  • Actions. Generative procedures call API integrations to look up orders, check shipping status and update addresses 8. Commerce Industry Agents connect to Shopify, Narvar, Stripe and Riskified to handle order management, returns and refunds 12.
  • Setup. A guided self-service setup flow covers simpler email and messaging use cases 4, and agents start from your existing knowledge and policies without scripting 1.
  • Handoff to people. Escalation flows forward conversations to an agent during working hours or fall back to email outside them, after collecting details such as order number 10.
  • Analytics. An hourly-updated dashboard reports volume, automated resolutions, escalations and CSAT by use case 11, and since May 18, 2026 it splits outcomes into assisted escalations, contained and verified resolutions 3.

Pricing

AI agents come with every Zendesk Support and Suite plan, and you pay per automated resolution 2. Each plan includes a monthly allowance per agent seat: 5 on Support Team and Suite Team, 10 on Suite Professional and 15 on Suite Enterprise 2. Beyond that, resolutions cost $1.50 each on a committed volume or $2.00 pay-as-you-go 2. Since May 18, 2026 only Verified resolutions count; assisted escalations and Contained resolutions, where the customer asks for nothing more but the LLM check doesn't confirm a fix, are free 3. Seats start at $19 per agent per month for Support Team and $55 for Suite Team on annual billing, and Enterprise is quote-only 2. A 10-agent Suite Professional team gets 100 included resolutions, so 1,000 a month adds about 900 × $1.50 = $1,350 on top of seats. Zendesk has said its outcome-based pricing will evolve further 4.

Security and data

Zendesk holds SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001, 27017, 27018, 27701 and 42001 certifications, plus FedRAMP LI-SaaS authorization and PCI DSS 14. It signs a HIPAA BAA, and the Data Center Location add-on lets you host data in the US, Europe or Asia Pacific 14. Zendesk uses OpenAI, Google, Anthropic and Amazon models alongside its own 17. Third-party vendors may not train on your data and run with zero data retention 15,16. Zendesk's own models can train on sanitized customer data that may serve other customers, and customers control whether their data is used 15,16.
